THE CAREERS AND HIGHER EDUCATION MAGAZINE FROM THE INSPIRING FUTURES FOUNDATION
Case Study: Mathew Burnett

Matthew Burnett is 18 years old and in his final year in the Sixth Form of the Stamford Endowed Schools in Lincolnshire. He is studying Maths, Chemistry and Biology.

Matthew has long harboured an interest in a career in Biochemistry and intends to read it as his degree course at university.

Recently he was able to take advantage of a brilliant opportunity to develop his interest and understanding through a four week placement working under Professor John Greenwood at the University College of London’s Institute of Opthalmology. Matthew’s Chemistry teacher, Mrs Nicola Cliffe, arranged the placement for him and also helped to secure a Nuffield Bursary, which funded his travelling and living expenses for the duration of the placement.

Matthew worked with PhD students studying the migration of white blood cells in the human body. His investigations focused on the eye and the brain and, through the use of the Institute’s advanced facilities, including electron microscopes and 3-D imaging laser technology, Matthew was able to make a significant contribution towards the understanding of how migration paths and proteins involved in them can contribute to sight degeneration and other malfunctions in the nervous system.

Matthew was thrilled to be involved in such cutting edge research, and to be given so much responsibility, often working on his own with very little formal briefing. His enthusiasm inspired him to write a 17 page report on his findings, which he was invited to present and display at the Exscitec Display Day at Imperial College in London. The British Association for the Advancement of Science were so impressed with Matthew’s work that they have invited him to represent  the London region in a National Final in March, which will be used to select students to represent Britain in a pan-European later in the year.

All of this will sit very prettily on Matthew’s CV. He has already been encouraged to apply to Imperial College, and has also been told he is welcome back to do more work at University College at any time. The future looks bright, and Matthew is very grateful to his teachers, the Nuffield Foundation and to University College for the help and the opportunity they have combined to give him to make some substantial steps along the path to his career of choice.
